Seminar set 6 March 15 (am)

Intelligent pills, brain implants, printing new skins, smart contact lenses robot care givers Lab on a chip are just some of the technology discussed and some of the technology discussed are found on the internet as said by the speaker. For me this technology had so many potential but I think this is for gimmick only that only rich people can get. Some function like the intelligent pills are used that functions specific functions like for example sickness that only be target by this pill. The speaker talked about diabetic sickness like gestational, type 1 and type 2 diabetes which actually an introduction to an emerging technology which is the bionic pancreas. It decides how much insulin should it produce for your body and actually also mentioned Gary v has this technology in his body. To my surprise it is not actually an implant but a sensor that you attach to the body. Nanotechnology was also discussed and she explained its specification and functions. It also discussed the types of the nanotechnology. Its importance to people especially when it comes to cancer. Such said by the speaker that was successful was the copy of lotus leaves. But then again this for me has a long way to go. She also discussed the safety of sunscreen lotions. But the real new technology that she uses is the fluorescence microscope. It is basically a digital image to see the things that the microscope has like the cells. The method of scanning the cell through the Fluorescence microscope is called Fluorescence in situ hybridization which is also called FISH. Such diseases that were examines is the CML or Leukemia for short breast cancer cells bladder cancer. This seminar has taught me that medicine technology is so useful but still very expensive. This technology specifically is only found in expensive hospitals and although this technology is good it proves that only rich or middle class can take advantage of this. I hope that someday I myself can try to research on how this technology can be made cheap for public hospitals specifically in the Philippines.

The next speaker started out with the introduction of pancreatic cancer and how hard it is to detect pancreatic cancer and the diagnostic methods of detecting it like angiography, CA 19-9, CT, recap which scopes through the intestine , fine needle biopsy, histology which just sees the tissue through microscope. After that he presented the idea which is by adding anti bodies and nanotubes therefore a technology that detects cancer. Unlike the previous talk which is expensive this one is cheaper which is advantageous to most. The cancer detection method did not change for six years because there are 8000 proteins that can be detected in a body. Elisa or enzyme linked immune sorbent assay that is a method that detects the cancer by changing color by attaching itself to the protein. But this method is too expensive just for detection. So this Elisa method is not useful therefore the idea of putting together antibodies and nanotubes for detection. The man behind the idea was rejected by 199 out of 200 doctors but there was this one who had him reported and because of that the idea became successful. It works by surrounding the nanotube with a paper that is used to detect the cancer. This paper is a filter paper that gets the mestholin protein that is needed for detection of the cancer. To summarize he was able to compare the two methods that Elisa is much more expensive to do and the nanotubes that is cheaper. Now this is much more better for because this is much more cheaper to use that can benefit and to my surprise this idea was done by a 15 year old which made me motivated that I too can do something that is so extraordinary and useful to societies problem like poverty. This I say can be a potential trend in medical field.
